Worship Music and Songs

Many kinds of music is used in Finnish church services and meetings. Some of it is solemn and very traditional in style, some today’s popular music. We use popular music in the Vineyard because it is close to the music we listen to at home.

How is worship music different from hymns? There are many preaching and evangelizing songs in the hymnal, where as worship music could best be compared to prayer: thankful, repentance or worship prayer. This is how modern worhip music can be seen to have common ground with the Psalms in the Old Testament - the roots of Christian music. The Psalms are full of people singing to God about the joys and hurts of life – just like in the modern worship music. Happiness and singing of God’s goodness still continue to make people dance as they did thousands of years ago.

Modern worship songs are also close to Orthodox church service songs which are meditative prayer directed to God. Apostle Paul exhorts the church:

"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Col.3:16-17)

Worship is not restricted to singing as Paul said: dance, arts, literature and acting can also be seen as worshiping God. As a matter of fact, we should live our lives to praise and honour God.
